Poisoning, Not Overdose: Redefining the Fentanyl Crisis

Denver, Colorado — [December 6, 2025] — The Northern Colorado Drug Task Force (NCDTF) is proud to announce an episode of the Colorado FOP Podcast featuring a powerful and timely conversation on the fentanyl crisis. The episode will bring together a veteran Colorado narcotics detective and Andrea Thomas, founder of Facing Fentanyl, for an in-depth discussion on the impact of illicit fentanyl, the realities on the front lines, and the growing need for statewide prevention and community education.

Andrea Thomas, who founded Facing Fentanyl after losing her daughter Ashley to a counterfeit pill, has become a national voice for education, prevention, and legislative action surrounding fentanyl-related deaths. Her work has helped families, policymakers, and communities understand the urgent need for awareness in the face of a rapidly evolving drug landscape.

Joining her is Detective Dan Bontz, a narcotics detective with extensive experience in fentanyl-related investigations, community outreach, and overdose response. Together, the two will offer a rare dual perspective—combining lived experience, public safety insights, and a shared mission to save lives.

“This conversation highlights the human and investigative side of the fentanyl epidemic,” said Lt. Mark Hertz, Commander of the Northern Colorado Drug Task Force. “Our goal is to give Coloradans information they can act on—whether as parents, community leaders, or simply neighbors looking out for one another.”

Key topics in the episode include:

  • The surge of counterfeit pills across Colorado
  • Trends in fentanyl trafficking and distribution
  • The role of education and prevention in reducing deaths
  • Resources for families, schools, and community groups
  • Collaborative efforts between law enforcement and advocacy organizations

The episode will be available on the Colorado FOP Podcast platforms, including Spotify, and YouTube, on December 6, 2025
